I
would advise you to stay at another hotel because this one IS NOT worth
the money. We had some weirdo staying (i actually think he lived there)
next door to us. He called the phone in our room several times just to
breath into the phone. We actually had no idea who was calling until the
staff told us it was him and that they were too afraid to kick him out. He
also left us a note on our car that was written in gibberish, I think he
was drunk when he wrote it.
This
is the worst hotel/motel experience I have ever had and that includes a
couple of third world countries. This place shouldn't even get one star. They say that they have recently renovated this dump! The furniture had big pieces missing from it. There was a big screen TV that they stored in the family unit that we were in....it had a cracked screen. One of the beds had either blood or some other bodily fluid on the sheets. The boxsprings had all kinds of crap on them. The lampshade had petrified bugs in it. The door did not fit properly and you could see outside from the whole side of where the doorknob was. The tub and shower had years of mold growth. My kids refused to shower here. My dog was kenneled in a better place. I was so embarrassed because we had other people with us ...and I made the reservations. My golf weekend group stayed here - proximity to Niagara Falls and price were main reasons. The most basic rooms - thin walls, bad TV, threadbare towels (or were those washcloths?), 30 year old furniture. Not exactly dirty, but I didn't want to linger. People hanging around the parking lot and balconies - I wouldn't want my wife or kids near here. Strip clubs, cheap stores, and 'female escorts' were the neighbors. A cheap, R-Rated motel for a quick sleep only - bring the Purell. The
Arkona is a beautiful, family oriented motel. The staff member at the desk
was fluent in several languages by the sounds of it. Their pool was filled
with nice water. I've never seen such a black parking lot, with lines so
straight before, it was quite attractive. The room had a bed, with a
mattress too, I couldn't beleive it. The yellow tint to the walls gave an
antique look to the room. Once the black water from the taps was done
running through, and the smell had gone away, the cold water in the shower
was really refreshing. I did enquire about there being no hot water, but I
am not sure if the person at reception included english as one of his
languages. Disinterested staff, other patrons renting by the week, maintenance issues. Other than that, it was fine.

The Arkona is one of a long series of rather similar-looking tourist motels and hotels along Lundy's Lane (the old Hwy #20 leading from the falls toward Hamilton) - there are so many in this little town that even honeymoon-style rooms with the large heart-shaped Jacuzzi bath can be had almost anywhere in Niagara, sometimes under $C100.The Arkona is a motel (not hotel) of reasonable quality with outside corridors, free parking at door, free local calls ('phone is PC/laptop-compatible with a slight delay after the local number due to the motel 'phone system), A/C, colour cable TV and a heated outdoor pool (the air is cold but the water is warm). There is no restaurant on-site; the package deals on arkona motel's webpages are based on coupons for dinner for two at off-site restaurants. The Arkona is not downtown but is adjacent (directly to the right of) the AmeriCana Resort which does have a good restaurant (Jack Tanners) and hotel/convention facilities. A pair of convenience stores (one with a submarine sandwich shop, the other with a fuel station) are also about a block away and there's plenty more fast food along Lundy's Lane closer to downtown.$C120 (after tax, double occupancy, high season) will get one of the better rooms, dominated by a large heart-shaped tub surrounded by wall mirrors (bring window cleaner!) and a king-size bed which looks more than large enough to accommodate a threesome of travellers comfortably for the night. You will need to step around the tub to adjust the air conditioner and the washroom is smaller (shower, not bath) to make room for the large Jacuzzi bath in the main room. This room is a well-furnished, comfortable place to spend some time alone together with your sweetnlovinlady but be sure to bring flowers, candles or wine glasses as otherwise you will be driving around Niagara trying to find these - there is at least one shopping mall and one department store but they (while close to QEW) aren't right on Lundy's so you'll need to check local maps for locations.Standard motel-style Arkona rooms are also available for about $C80 (double occupancy, high season, one queen bed) and accommodations suitable for families hauling carloads of kids to the Falls or to Marineland are offered too. Non-smoking rooms are available. The location is far enough from downtown that you need to drive to see the Falls (parking can cost $C12-18) and other key attractions; there is also some local bus service on Lundy's Lane well into the evening (not sure how far it goes or how often it runs). The Niagara Falls area is mostly tourist-related (hotel/motel, food, entertainment) as the major population centres in the region are St Catherines and (on the US side) Buffalo, not Niagara.Overall, the Arkona or other nearby motels are a good place to stay as they're just far enough away from the noise and neon of Clifton Hill and downtown Niagara for a sound night's sleep.A day or two is likely more than enough to see Niagara itself (the Falls, the Casino and Marineland being the local attractions - and the touristy stuff will become very clichéd rather quickly) before getting back on the road to see more refined attractions elsewhere in the region such as Niagara wine country, the 1812 historical sites or the Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake. I wouldn't even give this place 1 star. This is a dump and attracts hookers and strippers from the clubs down the street. We saw quite a few "Strange" people coming and going and music from cars in the parking lot. This place may have been good in the day but if you want a sleezy motel and dirty rooms stay here. First thing when you walk in there are stains everywhere. The bathroom looks like it was kicked in the whole bottom is missing. We slept in our clothes (not our pajamas) and used our shirts as pillow cases. We were so scared of the blankets that we used our own towels from home as blankets. The curtains were hanging off the hook, the phone did not work and did not have a dial tone. Stains on the sheets (don't ask)! We only complained about one thinga nd none cared or responded. Never for any circumstance should you stay here!!!!!!!!!!! Sleep in your car instead!
